SCOTTISH RITE LEARNING CENTER

DYSLEXIA THERAPIST TRAINING COURSE

 

 

The Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas offers Therapist Training for teachers.  The research-based curriculum is an Orton-Gillingham based, structured, multisensory system for teaching basic language skills.  The graduate level training program is for individuals who desire to become a specialist in working with children and adults with dyslexia and related language learning disorders.

 

Content of the course includes information and instruction in the following areas:

 

·        Alphabet/Dictionary

·        Graphophonemic Knowledge/ Phonics*

·        Morphology

·        Word Recognition

·        Reading Fluency*

·        Vocabulary*

·        Reading Comprehension*

·        Phonemic Awareness*

·        Spelling

·        Current research and legislation relating to dyslexia

·        Characteristics of dyslexia including identification and placement

·        Multisensory and discovery teaching techniques

2007 TRAINING DATES

 

The Introductory Course of the Therapist Training program will be offered on May 30 – JUNE 19, 2007, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

 

Classes will be held at the Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE WORK

 

 

 

 

 

First Year Course Work

 

·        Introductory Course (90 hours), 3 weeks in June, M – F, 8:30-4:00

·        Four Introductory Seminars and the Lecture Series during the year

·        Teaching the curriculum in therapy situations to either an individual

and/or small groups during the year 

·        Minimum of five demonstration lessons during the year

 

 

Second Year Course Work

 

·        Advanced Course (60 hours), 2 weeks in June; M-F, 8:30-4:00

·        Three Advanced Seminars and the Lecture Series during the year

·        Continuation of teaching the curriculum in therapy situations to either  an individual and/or small groups during the year 

·        Minimum of five demonstration lessons during the year

 

 

Therapy Experience for Therapist Certification to include:

 

·        A minimum of 700 hours of clinical teaching under the supervision of

the Scottish Rite Learning Center staff

·        A minimum of three therapy situations

·        Beginning the curriculum at least three times

·        Experience teaching in the advanced portion of the curriculum

 

 

Therapist Certification is awarded upon completion of the course work and therapy experience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

 

 

APPLICANTS must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution to be eligible for the training.  Teachers who plan on using the program in their classroom should have the approval and support of their school officials.

 

To apply for Therapist Training, complete and return the application form with a $50.00 deposit, applicable to the first year’s tuition, and a copy of your college transcript.  The deposit is refundable upon written request received no later than two weeks prior to the first day of class.  After receiving your application, the center will call you to schedule an appointment.

 

Tuition and Materials – Tuition is payable to the Scottish Rite Learning Center and is to be received on or before the first day of classes.

 

 As a result of the extensive research that has been done in the area of reading and dyslexia, the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas has developed the Take Flight Curriculum.  This research-based curriculum has been implemented into both the student and the therapist training at the Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas.  The curriculum materials must be ordered from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and shipped to the applicant’s address.

 

Partial scholarships are available.  To request financial assistance, send a letter stating the reasons for your request to Linda Stringer, Director.  You may attach the letter to your application.
